Once upon a time in Texas by Mable Cash 7-4-08

About 30 years after Columbus arrived in the Americas, European explorers and adventurers from more than 25 countries were leaving Europe to seek their fortune in the “New World.” Spain was among the first to arrive on Texas shores. Spain and France both settled parts of Texas territory. But the largest migration of Europeans to Texas occurred in the mid-1800s, after Texas had become a part of the United States. Many came from crowded cities and set sail for the “land of opportunity,” bringing with them their cultural habits and customs. Immigrants from Germany, Poland, France, Norway, Greece, Italy and Belgium spoke a variety of languages. Each group favored different foods and their own way of doing things.

After arriving on the Texas coast, they gathered their belongings and many walked hundreds of miles to find land on which to settle. Only the hardy survived the weather, sickness and battles with Indians who were upset over claims on their territory.

Meanwhile, as the Europeans arrived by sea, Anglo-Americans were arriving in Texas by horse, stagecoach, covered wagon and even by foot. Their journeys were filled with adventure and pain. They were coming from Tennessee, Alabama and other southern states, some searching for a better life, some running from the law or from unpaid debts. No matter the reason they came, they set out to claim a plot of property in Texas! Most of these settlers were Americans of English, Scottish or Irish ancestry. Their arrival set off more land disputes with the Native American Texans and battles were fought over this issue. Sam Houston befriended both the Anglo-American Texans and the Native-American Texans and created peace treaties to prevent more bloodshed. But the United States Government would not allow Houston to honor every treaty.

The Anglo American settlers built several styles of houses, most of the structures were built of natural resources, like logs and stones. The most popular design used by the settlers in early Texas was the “dog-trot” style. An open space separated the two rooms of the structure, all covered by a single roof. This design allowed breezes to flow through the cabin during the hot Texas summers.

(This space often served as sleeping quarters for guests and or the family dogs.)

“Ahmo” is a Texanese word meaning a notice of intent, as “Ahmo hit you upside the head if you don’t quit that!”

Once upon a time in Texas by Mable Cash 6-27-08

Texas is filled with adventuresome people whose ancestors with a thirst for freedom, built a legendary state. They will be remembered for a bit of their heritage lives on and has become a part of Texas culture that we share. Our blended culture reflects a variety of values, ideas, beliefs and customs. Like threads of a woven tapestry, the various cultures add interest, color and beauty to our ethnic work of art with this combination. Texas can boast a rugged but romantic history. Texas has embraced both indigenous and immigrant people.

The original Texans were twelve tribes of Native Americans, one of whom gave our Texas territory its name. The Caddoes called each other “Tayshas,” meaning friends or allies. When Spanish explorers arrived, the Caddoes called them “Tayshas.” The explorers started calling friendly Native Americans “Tayshas.” Soon this word was adapted into English and it sounded like, “Texas.”

Before Texas became a republic and before it became the 28th state of the United States, it was a part of Mexico. Many who made Texas their home at that time were of Native American, Spanish and Mexican cultures.

Early Mexican Texans were called, “Tejanas” and “Tejanos.” Many farmed and ranched the nearby lands of San Antonio, LaBahia and Nacogdoches. The “Tejanas” tended the family’s needs, the domestic animals and the garden. Others helped organize community projects. The “Tejanos” tended the large herds of livestock and worked with the “Vaqueros,” the first “Cowboys.” The Tejanas and Tejanos brought to our culture, customs and habits that have become a part of our lives. Although English is primarily spoken in Texas, some Spanish words have become a part of the Texas vocabulary. Aren’t these Spanish words now a familiar part of our Texanese speech? Try: rodeo, enchilada, tamale, siesta, loco, hacienda and serape. (Every one of these words passed through my English “spell-check” without a hitch.)

Texas cowboys learned their trade from Mexican vaqueros. Some equipment and clothing worn by cowboys originated from the vaqueros. The cowboy hat evolved from the vaqueros large sombreros. The seat-less leather pants, chaps, (pronounced “shaps”) protected the wearers legs from cactus and thorny underbrush. Chaps is short for “chaperejos” a Spanish word that means, “leather breeches.” Even our current saddles and spurs are modeled from those originally designed by the vaqueros.

Next week let’s examine other ethnic groups that have blended into the present day Texans, each bringing along their unique culture and by doing so, have produced a peculiar people, the off-spring of these blends, a Texan!

Once upon a time in Texas by Mable Cash 6-6-08

Texas boasts some of the best restaurants in our country, serving cuisine from all over the world. But ask a Texan about his favorite food and you’ll likely hear “smoked brisket,” “venison chili” or “apple/cinnamon kolaches.” For these are Texas foods. Perhaps they started out as something else back in Europe or Mexico but they have become uniquely TEXAN as settlers adapted the old recipes, to use what substitutes were available in their new environment.

Native Texas had a lot to offer in natural resources. The Caddo/ Hasinai Confederation of East Texas cultivated squash, corn, beans, pumpkins, tomatoes, potatoes, onions and other vegetables. Some fruits, such as grapes and melons grew wild. Wild game was plentiful and a variety of fish spawned in the lakes, rivers and along the Gulf coast.

It did take some time to adjust to Texas climate and the new surroundings. Stephen F. Austin, in a letter to his sister, wrote, “My work is basically sustained by: corn coffee, cornbread, milk and butter in a bachelor’s household of confusion, dirt and torment.”

Corn coffee was a thin, bitter brew made by steeping burned corn in water and likely caused Austin to long for the real thing. Austin in correspondence with his cousin Capt. Henry Austin, suggested that he look along the Rio Grande Valley and consider establishing a coffee plantation. Although Texas settlers never managed to grow their own coffee, they did learn to take advantage of foods that grow in Texas.

They learned to dry wild blackberries, plums and grapes to use for fruit pies during the winter months. They served “wilted salads” made of wild greens, onions and a mixture of hot bacon drippings with vinegar. Sugar was replaced with molasses because sorghum grew better than sugar cane in the area. Cornmeal took the place of wheat flour because Texas climate was too hot for good wheat production.

The concoctions we consider unique to Texas cuisine are the direct results of, “waste no, want not” approach. Chicken fried steak and barbecue developed as cooks attempted to make the toughest cuts of meat edible, perhaps even desirable. Tough and gamey wild life were stewed with lots of chili peppers to overpower the bad taste. (It’s been said that chili made this way and served in the San Antonio jails was so good that prisoners broke parole just to get some more.)

Whatever happened to be put on the dinner table, coffee was served along with it. Coffee was listed as a staple on provisions lists from the Texas Rangers’ chuck wagon supply to Gen. Zachary Taylor’s troop rations in the Mexican/American War. A pot of coffee was kept boiling on the stove in pioneer homes for their family or unexpected guests. During the Civil War, Texans experimented, having to make do with a hot drink made of parched grain….acorns, okra, corn and other seeds. Likely, Stephen F. Austin would have offered his sympathy.

While unexpected visitors could be sure of a warm welcome from frontier families, our famous Texas hospitality didn’t always apply to rough hash joints of the early frontier. A traveler, studying the menu from one such place, ordered vol-au-vent, a mixture of meat and vegetables in a cream sauce, served in a puff pastry. The proprietor stuck his .45 in the customer’s ear and growled, “You’ll have the hash.” Faced with such a hearty recommendation from the chef, the customer ordered the hash and enjoyed it!

Once upon a time Ah-yo-keh, a little Cherokee Indian girl lay beside a running stream, trailing her small hand in the cool clear water. She was troubled by what she had overheard Pawlee, the corn woman say to her mother this morning. “I warn you because I am your friend. Our people fear that your husband is making magic against the tribe. They think he talks with evil powers for he makes strange sounds and puts marks on birch bark.”

Ah-yo-keh thought about what she had heard and was troubled. She could not believe that he father dealt in magic; for she knew him to be kind and good. How could tribe-members think that about him? She tip-toed to the place where her father was working and hid in the bushes, observing. He was acting peculiar; could the tribe be right? Fear touched her heart.

Sequoyah sat on a log near their cabin, his head thrown back and his eyes closed. He was making queer sounds. Now and then he would take a piece of birch bark and make a mark on it.

Ah-yo-keh stepped out from the shrubbery and with a hesitant voice, asked, “Father, what are you doing?”

Sequoyah put aside the bark and lit his pipe and patted the log beside him. Little Ah-yo-keh climbed up beside him. “This is a rather long story, so listen carefully,” he said.

“When I was a young brave, I saw a white man looking at paper on which were many black marks. He told me that these marks made a message on the paper. I thought how wonderful and useful that the white man can send messages to people who are miles away. And I’m thinking how wonderful it would be if the Cherokees could do the same thing! Perhaps the strength and wisdom of the white man is because they have written down the wisdom of each generation and later generations can learn that wisdom and more!”

Ah-yo-keh nodded and listened to her father as he continued. “I’m trying to find a way to write our Cherokee language. The white man’s marks will not do for Cherokee words for there are sounds in our words that cannot be made with the white man’s marks. I’ve been trying to find a mark for each of our sounds, to make a Cherokee alphabet. I sit here thinking of all the sounds in Cherokee talk. When I think of a sound, I make a mark for it. I have it almost completed. Soon we will have our own alphabet. Then we will be able to read and write to each other.”

“But why do people think you are making bad magic against the tribe?”

“When I finish my work and can make others understand, they will thank me,” said her father. “Then let me help you,” said the child. She gathered bark and helped her father make the marks. Sequoyah’s face brightened, “What a wonderful idea! I will teach you to read and write and the chiefs will know there is no evil in our project.” Sequoyah and his daughter spent many long hours together making the marks and the sounds of the Cherokee language.

Word came that the tribe chiefs were angry and feared Sequoyah was making magic to bring injury to the Cherokee nation. The chiefs came to Sequoyah’s cabin to hold an investigation.

Ah-yo-keh brought pieces of birch bark to her father. The chiefs examined them and said, “If there is good in this bark, show us that good.”

Sequoyah said, “I will show you and my young daughter will help me. I will write her a message and she will read it to you.”

“We shall send the child away and you will give me a message. I will write your message down on this birch bark. After that, take the bark to the child. She will read from it what your words have been.” When the chiefs took her the piece of bark on which were some familiar marks, the little girl with trembling hands took the bark and with a clear and steady voice, she read the words exactly as the chiefs had spoken them to her father.

The chiefs were amazed. Could this be true? Was it some kind of trick? Perhaps she had overheard what was said. They doubted what they had witnessed!

“No,” said Sequoyah, “my daughter read it from the bark. But come, let us far into the forest, away from the cabin and send another message to my daughter.”

Deep in the woods, they gave him another message which he marked onto the bark and gave to his daughter to read. Again, she recited the exact words that had been spoken in secret from the marks on the bark.

The chiefs huddled together and made their decisions and remarks….and finally the oldest chief spoke. “This thing you and your daughter have done is amazing. Can you teach it to others?”

Sequoyah nodded, “Of course, if a child can learn it, surely our young men will not find it difficult.”

In just a few months, thousands of Cherokees learned to read and write. Sequoyah was honored by his tribe. “Ability to write down a sound is a gift of the Great Spirit,” he said, “and the only reward I want is the privilege of teaching others.”

For the rest of his life he traveled throughout Cherokee settlements, teaching those who would learn. Sequoyah is remembered not only by the Cherokee but by all scholars, for he is the only man in the world who is known for making an alphabet by himself. A statue of this remarkable teacher stands in the Capitol at Washington, D.C.

Once upon a time in Texas by Mable Cash 5-24-08

In 1835-1837 the Republic of Texas had a government on horseback that was constantly on the move. Meetings for government officials were located in turn at Harrisburg, Galveston, San Jacinto, Velasco, and Columbia. In 1837 it moved to the new town of Houston and remained there for three years, for a permanent capitol had yet to be established. After a great deal of debates, it was 1839 before a congressional commission chose a site on the Colorado River in a small village in the wilderness called Waterloo, Texas. (I’ll bet you thought that I was going to say it was Austin.) The place called Waterloo had its name changed to Austin, in honor of Stephen F. Austin who led the first colonists into Texas territory. He is often called “The Father of Texas” by historians. The first capitol building was erected in 1852 but burned to the ground in 1881. Then the government had no place to attend to governmental business. The official needs had far out-grown the original building and a replacement would have to be much larger.

Times were hard for Texas after the Civil War. The State Treasury was empty and money was scarce. The State legislature chose to sell off some of our assets to raise money for a permanent capital building. They sold 3 million acres of public land to pay for our present day State Capital building! (When Texas was annexed into the United States in 1845, she agreed to keep all her debts and all her public lands as a condition of Statehood) Architects drew up plans for consideration and a design was chosen. The structure was to be placed on the original site of the old capitol on a hill commanding a view of Congress Ave. in Austin.

A company of English and Scottish investors accepted the offer to purchase the 3 million acres of Texas territory and named their new acreage the XIT cattle ranch. (Thus named for “Ten In Texas” because the holdings included part of ten Texas Counties.) With monies from this sale, the State Capitol building foundation could be laid. Architects used 15,000 carloads of pink granite from quarries in nearby Burnet County to build our imposing structure. The State assisted by building a 16-mile rail line from Burnet to Granite Mountain and provided 1,000 convicts for the entire building project! The iron columns that support this massive structure were made by prisoners from the penitentiary at Rusk from local Texas resources of coal, charcoal and limestone. Our capitol is a product of our State! The result of the design and workmanship is a building that resembles the National Capitol ….with the exception of one minor detail, the state house of Texas is several feet taller than its Washington counterpart.

As the construction of the State Capitol was nearing competition in 1888, it was decided to top off the dome with a zinc statue of the “Goddess of Liberty.” She was cast in sections and then put together before being hoisted into place atop the dome. The direction she faces was strongly suggested by some Confederate War veterans. Their comment was, “Don’t much matter where she faces as long as her backside faces north!”

The Texas State Capitol building topped with the Goddess of Liberty holding a lone star, completed in May of 1888 has just turned 120 years old! Happy Birthday to our Texas Goddess of Liberty!

Once upon a time in Texas by Mable Cash 5-16-08

The wind was cold and damp blowing across Point Bolivar near the mouth of Galveston Bay where a fort had been built in 1819 along the Texas coast. It was November of 1821 and only three females occupied the structure. Dr. James Long, a serious fighter for independence in Texas from Spain had brought his wife Jane, daughter Ann and a servant girl Kiamatia, to the fort, leaving for their protection, a handful of soldiers, while he led a second attempt to secure the freedom of Texas. In 1819 he had declared Texas free and independent when he, leading an army of 300 men captured Nacogdoches. (The good Doctor refused to accept the Adams-Ones Treaty of 1819 recognizing Texas as a part of Spanish territory. He was convinced that Texas was a part of the Louisiana Purchase.) Though his endeavor was successful for a little while and settlers began moving into the territory; as soon as he was away in a meeting with Jean Lafitte, Spanish forces marched on Nacogdoches from San Antonio. The settlers scattered, some returning to the United States, some were captured and a few were killed, including Dr. Long’s brother. Dr. Long, having failed in his endeavor to liberate Texas, returned to his family in Natchez, Mississippi. But by 1821, still believing that Texas should be a free and independent Republic, he once more was able to raise a small army of about 50 men willing to fight for this cause.

Dr.Long’s wife Jane, supportive of her husband’s plans, accompanied him on this second invasion to free Texas. With his family established safely in the fort at Point Bolivar and leaving guards for their protection, he lead the remainder of his forces inland to Goliad. As soon as Mexican forces became aware of their presence in Goliad, an army came by way of San Antonio and forced Long’s army to surrender. While awaiting trial, Long was killed by a Mexican soldier.

Meanwhile, back at the fort, Jane knew nothing of her husband’s fate. The guards who had remained to protect Longs’ family, grew restless and left, returning to New Orleans in the fall of 1821. December was the month that Jane’s baby was to be born! Jane, daughter Ann and servant, Kiamatia took inventory and realized how meager their food supply was. Together, they daily gathered driftwood from the beaches and searched for oysters, fished and trapped small birds. One day, a party of Karankawas Indians appeared on the beach. The women rushed back to the fort and fired the cannon. Their action frightened them away.. The winter was harsh and the damp cold made survival difficult for them all, even more so with the arrival of a new baby girl! They patiently waited for Dr. Long to return.

Help finally arrived in the summer of 1822.The rescue party told Jane of her husband’s death. She and the children went back to the United States only to return to Texas in 1824 with Stephen F. Austin’s “Old 300” colonists.

Jane Long lived to see her husband’s dream of an independent Texas come true. She became successful, operating a boarding house in Brazoria and running a plantation in Richmond. Her farm was one of the most prosperous in Fort Bend County. Many noteworthy men, including Sam Houston and Mirabeau Lamar stayed at her boarding house. She died in 1880. Because of her devotion to the

dream of a free Republic of Texas, she is often referred to by historians as “The Mother of Texas.”

Once upon a time in Texas, by Mable Cash 5-9-08

Traveling this week, I spied a Ford pick-up truck with the following bumper-sticker, “American by birth, Texan by the grace of God.” I’ve thought about that statement and I’ve come to this conclusion, that person is a proud American who considers it a blessing from God to have been born in Texas and is acknowledging that fact. Some folks weren’t born in Texas but they came here for various reasons. The following excerpt is taken from “My Rambles” by Solomon Alexander Wright.

“One cold, rainy day a gang of old-timers were in a saloon drinking and sitting around the stove telling yarns and getting mighty cheerful. After awhile they all agreed to tell why they had come to Texas. One said he’d come because his neighbors all seemed anxious for him to try another climate. Another one said that he always thought a lot of his horses and that the brands on some he’d got hold of back in Georgia seemed to keep them from resting easy. Another one said he never did want to be tied down to property and had simply refused to inherit a shotgun from a man who wanted to be his father-in-law.

The Confessions went on this way until all but one old gray-whiskers had told his story. ‘ Now, Uncle Billy, let’s hear why you came to Texas,’ they said.

Uncle Billy stroked his chin and said: ‘Back in Kentucky, where I come from, I was a preacher… and a d—n good one. One Sunday morning I got up in the pulpit and told my flock how the congregation over in Pleasant Valley had agreed to build a twenty-five hundred dollar church house and were raising the money. I proposed that we go the Pleasant Valley brethren and sistern one better and build a thirty-five hundred dollar church house.

‘ They all sanctioned the idea. It had been a good year, and right then and there the money was subscribed. They appointed me treasurer. Bright and early next day I started out to collect the pledges. It certainly wasn’t blue Monday that week. I got every dollar of the thirty-five hundred. But I was in such a hurry to come to Texas that I didn’t have time to stay and build the church house.’”

No doubt, if you’ve delved into Texas History you’ll find that Texas had numerous rascals come to settle here. But as some folks say,” You’ve got to have a little gravel in your gizzard to get by.”

There’s a story of a young boy who was asked by his Sunday school teacher to name the birthplace of Jesus. He thought for while and finally made three guesses, Gladewater, Mount Pleasant and Bonham. The teacher finally told him that the answer was, Palestine. The youngster nodded and said, “I knew it was somewhere in East Texas!”

Once upon a time in Texas by Mable Cash… May2, 2008

Picture this: It is 1519, you are a native Texan, while out fishing in your yard, which is the Gulf of Mexico; you spy a peculiar sight. It appears to be a man, strangely dressed, floating along on a boat in the salty water. The stranger waves and brings his floating device to shore. As he approaches, he pats himself on his chest and utters these words, “Alvarez de Pineda.” He offers items for trading and then he plants a flag in your front yard, making a declaration in words you cannot understand, “I have discovered this place and I claim all this territory for Spain!” How would you handle this situation? Would you, (A) Smile, nod and serve him oysters on-the-half-shell? (B) Take him home to meet your wife and the new papoose? (C) Put him back on his boat, hand him his flag and point out to the big water? Or (D) Sink his boat and use his flag to diaper the baby?

The story of American Indians is a sad one. As settlers made their way to America they wanted land. Some traded for it, others simply took it. Those who fought for their land were often killed. The Indians had two good reasons to hate the incoming settlers; the white men had come to take their land and to kill their people. As Americans moved westward, the Indians were pushed ahead of them. The Cherokee, Delaware, Osage, Choctaw, Alabama, Coushatta and Seminole tribes were pushed from their native lands to Texas into territory claimed by twelve other tribes. Tribes indigenous to Texas are: Kiowa, who lived in the Texas Panhandle, north of the Canadian River,

Wichita, who settled along the Red River near the present day, Wichita Falls, Caddo, dwelled between the Trinity and the Sabine, on the Neches River ,often called “Forest Indians,” Comanche, roamed most of north-western portion of Texas, following the buffalo herds from Palo Duro Canyon to Edwards Plateau, Tonkawa, resided near the Brazos River in the area we refer to as the Brazos Valley, Karankawa, lived along the Gulf Coast, were fierce warriors with cannibalistic tendencies, Coahuiltecan, dwelled at the lower tip of west Texas near the Quitman Mts. along the Rio Grande, Apache(Lipan) settled at the head of these rivers, Guadalupe, San Antonio and Nueces, Jumano, lived alongside the Concho tribe on the Rio Grande on the southwestern border, Mescalero Apache, settled south of the Pecos River, were hunters and farmers, and Atakapan, lived in southeast Texas on the Trinity from the Brazos to the Sabine Rivers.

These early Texas inhabitants made a major contribution to the new-comers who came. Much of the food we eat today was introduced into our diets by the Indians. Europeans learned of corn, squash, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and cocoa beans,(from which chocolate is derived.) They shared a recipe for pemmican, which is similar to our present day, “jerky.” They even taught the settlers their technique for fertilizing and rotating the crops they raised. Their most valuable gift to the white man was their knowledge of medical treatments that were unknown to the Europeans. Indians taught them how to use bacteria-fighting herbs, aspirin-like extracts from tree bark and quinine for treating malaria.

Sam Houston, a friend of the Indians intervened and set aside the Alabama-Coushatta Reservation, for those who would stay in the Big Thicket near Livingston. Land near El Paso was reserved for Indians, as well. Our early history is of different peoples, both desiring the same territory. Priests came and tried to change the Indians’ ways, to live as the white men. But the Indians were free people, as were their ancestors. They had no desire nor need for fences on their land.

The settlers and the Indians fought bravely for what each thought was theirs…. In the end, the strongest took the prize. This is a bitter-sweet period in our Texas history.

Once upon a time in Texas by Mable Cash 4-25- 2008



Climbing the wooden stairway in the old County Courthouse in Centerville to the restored courtroom was like an adventure into the past. It is April 21, 2008, the anniversary date of the Battle of San Jacinto, April 21, 1836. Remembering 900 Texans, fighting for liberty from Mexico against Mexican troops that numbered 1200, were victorious and freedom for Texas was the prize!

This celebration was hosted by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Fort Boggy Chapter, honoring all those who contributed to the independence of Texas. Nick Watson spoke of the cost of freedom, the commitment required to retain it and the reason why all Texans should appreciate the liberties we enjoy. Accompanied by his guitar, he sang a ballad, “The Siege of the Alamo.” Mr. David Hanover, Secretary General of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, shared with us a portion of “General Houston’s Official Report of the Battle of San Jacinto.” The following is a brief report in remembrance of this momentous event in our Texas history.

Early settlers in Texas had agreed to honor the Mexican Constitution of 1824. The rights and privileges agreed to in this document were important to the Texans. When Santa Anna ignored these rights the Texas Revolution began as people in Texas tried to defend the Mexican Constitution of 1824. Changes were taking place as thousands of Americans poured into Texas. Meanwhile, Santa Anna was becoming an absolute ruler with complete power. It is certain, that on March 6, 1836, more than 180 Texans were willing to stand and die for the rights they held under the constitution. Santa Anna sent tax collectors, accompanied by Mexican troops into Texas.

Stephen F. Austin, after 2 years of Mexican imprisonment, returns to Texas, advising all Texans to stand against the dictatorship of Santa Anna and prepare for the oncoming troops of General Cos. Texans challenged the Mexican military at Gonzales. Texans realized that they were in a war for freedom.

From November 1835 until March 1836 there was some confusion in the provisional government of Texas. A new convention was scheduled to meet on March 1, 1836. (They thought they had plenty of time to prepare for the upcoming war.) But Santa Anna crossed the Rio Grande in early February of 1836 and heading for San Antonio with his army…..

Santa Anna thought his victory at the Alamo would convince all other Texans that he and his troops could not be defeated. Instead it proved to be an inspiration for fighting Texans. March 2, 1836 when Texas Independence was declared, the vote in favor of this declaration was unanimous! As fighting for independence continued, Sam Houston was trying to organize an army that was short on troops, guns, ammunition, supplies and money. Meanwhile, his scout, Deaf Smith informed him that Santa Anna along with 1000 soldiers were heading toward the makeshift Texas Army at Gonzales. Houston ordered a retreat. All supplies were removed and on March 12, 1836, Houston burned Gonzales to the ground. Settlers fled eastward for about five weeks. With news of defeats coming in regularly, Houston’s troops pressed to stand and fight. Confiding in no one, Houston moved his small army eastward toward the Brazos River. He led his men to Groce’s Crossing, near Hempstead. Here they camped and for two weeks, he intensely drilled his troops and taught them military strategy. He created a scouting unit and increased supplies and ammunitions. The Army was given two cannons which the Texans named, “Twin Sisters.” On April 14th, the Texans Army left Groce’s Crossing and marched toward Harrisburg. The Scouting Unit reported Santa Anna’s army was encamped near Harrisburg on the San Jacinto River.

Houston moved the Texans down Buffalo Bayou and on April 20th, camped beside the San Jacinto River in a thick grove of live oak trees. To attack the Texans, the Mexicans would have to cross an open prairie. That afternoon, there was a skirmish between small parties of Texans and Mexicans. The Twin Sisters discouraged the enemy’s advancement and Santa Anna pulled his forces back.

April 21, 1836 at 3:00 pm, 900 Texans were ready to charge the 1,200 Mexican troops. Deaf Smith had already gone to destroy the bridge at Vince’s Bayou, cutting off any chance for Santa Anna to receive any reinforcements. As the Texans moved from the live oak grove onto the prairie, they were still out of sight from the Mexican sentries because of high ground in front of the troops. Many Mexican soldiers were taking an afternoon rest and were startled to hear Texas soldiers screaming, “Remember the Alamo,” as they came running toward them firing their weapons.

The battle lasted less than twenty minutes. The passion of the Texas patriots could not be contained nor subdued. When the shooting stopped, 630 Mexicans had been killed. Nine Texans died. Sam Houston was wounded, his ankle shattered by a musket ball. Santa Anna was found the following day, hiding in a wooded area. His life was spared to secure his acknowledgment of the independence of Texas from Mexico. The war was over. This historical victory affects every Texan. Texas exists today, in spite of overwhelming odds in an impossible situation because of the bravery of free men who were willing to fight for the cause of freedom.

The San Jacinto monument stands today, a reminder of the struggle that occurred in this place for life, liberty and the freedom we have to pursue our dreams. Remember these heroes of freedom and honor their memory. May god continue to bless Texas!

Once upon a time in Texas, by Mable Cash 4-18-08

It was Sunday morning, the wind was chilly and the water in the horse trough was not warm. Stacks of baled hay blocked some of the wind from the preacher and the candidate for baptism. About 35 people stood in a semicircle around the baptismal site, lending their quiet encouragement. A young cowboy/rancher stepped into the chilly, water-filled trough without flinching. The preacher, earnestly declaring before God and all these witnesses that this rugged man in the water had confessed himself a hopeless sinner and had received Christ as Savior. “Now he’s getting baptized, dying to his old ways and arising into the newness of life, a child of the King! I baptize you, Brother, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.” He was totally submerged and then lifted up. And all the witnesses said, “Amen!”

Then they had a celebration with music from a fiddle and some guitars. There was singing and clapping and reading of the Word. The preacher read from John chapter 8. The majority of the crowd were cattlemen and ranchers, who removed their hats, bowed and prayed for this new brother. Weathered cowpokes and prosperous ranchers dressed in their best jeans and boots were praising God for the salvation of this soul. The new “Brother” was joyously embraced and they broke bread together!

This could have been a story related and written from April 4, 1850 but it isn’t. This event happened on April 4, 2008 in Jewett, Texas at the “All Around Cowboy Church,” I was there. If you want to know more about it, call: 903-390-1410/936-348-1987.

The State was surprised and shocked when Sam Houston was immersed in the “Baptizing Hole,” in Rocky Creek, near Independence, Texas. Ever since their marriage, his wife, Margaret had been waging a gentle campaign for his soul. Although Houston’s behavior had undergone a great deal of improvement, piety was still lacking, somewhat. When a friend teased him, after the baptizing, about all his sins being washed away, Houston, recalling all his past transgressions of drinking and swearing during all the days he spent with the Cherokees, he replied.. “I hope so, but if they were all washed away, Lord help the fish below.” (This information was gleaned from “An Album of History” by James Haley, copyright 1985)

Samuel Brenner of Lubbock, Texas said, “I’ve worked around cattle all my life and I’m guessing I learned all there is to know about it. I think I can sum it all up in one thing, ‘You can’t drink coffee on a running horse!’”

Another Lubbock resident said to a traveler, “You know, last year Lubbock had an annual rainfall of 12 inches!”

The traveler replied, “Yeah, I was out there that day.”

Once upon a time in Texas, by Mable Cash April 11, 2008


Both Spain and France claimed the territory of Texas as their own, so when France sold the Louisiana Territory to the United States, some thought the Texas territory was part of the deal. Spain strongly disagreed and continued to claim the territory. When Spain gave up Florida, a line was drawn, giving Texas to Spain but only for a while. In 1810, folks living in Mexico begin fighting for their freedom from Spain. By 1821, when Mexico was victorious, the territory of Texas became a part of Mexico and a new flag waved over Texas, the Mexican flag, green, white and red bars. On the middle bar there is an eagle sitting on a cactus, holding a snake in its mouth.


This is flag number three. Mexican leaders agreed to allow Americans in to settle the new territory. Moses and Stephen F. Austin were the first impresarios! Those who purchased the land were required to follow the laws of Mexico. Things went well for a while, then the Mexican leaders wrote some new laws that the settlers of Texas considered unfair and refused to obey. When Mexican soldiers were sent to enforce the new laws, the Texans refused and this led to war! (More about this war, later) The war ended at the Battle of San Jacinto with a great victory for Texas! Under its leaders in 1836, Texas became a free country called the Republic of Texas. A new flag was designed to fly over Texas. It has a white band over a red band with a blue bar on the side. In the center of the blue bar is a white star.

This flag makes Texans proud, it is flag number four.

Texas agreed to become a part of the United States in 1846. The American flag had thirteen red and white stripes with a white star on blue for each state. Texas became the twenty eighth star on Old Glory! The beautiful flag of the Republic of Texas became the State flag. Here we have flag number five,


the United States of America.

A few years later, the US became fractural and brought about the “War between the States.” Texas was part of the Confederacy and the sixth flag flew over Texas. This confederate battle flag was red with blue stripes crossing from the corners. Thirteen white stars were placed on the blue stripes.


When the war was finished, all the States became united with the Union again.

Today, two flags proudly fly over Texas. We Texans are proud of both. People all over the world recognize these two flags, the Stars and Stripes of the USA and the Lone Star of Texas both flying at twenty feet.

Two important rivers in Texas have Spanish names. The Rio Grande, means the “Big River.” It is an international boundary. The Brazos de Dios, means, “Arms of God.” We now call this river, the Brazos. It was named by the captain of an expedition who was swept away from his party into the flooded river. Although considered lost by the party, he miraculously reached the other side unharmed! He said he came across the waters in the arms of God., thus, the “Brazos de Dios.”
